DISCS OF TRON ENVIRONMENTAL CABINET
PROJECT BLOG
(Updated: 10-10-07)
There's been a lot of interest in
the progression of various projects over here at RAM Controls, so the
following page has been created to provide background information on the
Discs of Tron "environmental" cabinet reproduction project,
including interesting photographs and
supporting text on the actual creation of the reproduction cabinet.

I
forget what year it was, but I was at Disneyland sometime in the
early to mid 80's, probably 1983 or 1984. It
was summertime and I was there with several friends one day.
Naturally, we had to
make our visit to the Starcade as always. This time was a
little different, however. As soon as I made my way up to the second
floor, I noticed a crapload of Environmental DoT's lined up along the wall.
Man, what a sight to see. I wish I had taken a few pictures to
share. I'm sure many of you recall the spectacle if you ever
went to D-land in the 80's. Anyhow, I fell in love with the
game instantly! Not only did the game look cool, but it was an
interesting game to play as well. Ever since I saw those games
lined up along the wall, it's been stuck in my head. It just
looked so fricken cool. Anyhow,
I've been after one of these for my own personal collection for well
over a decade. I believe it was in 1994 or 1995 when I
attended the SuperAuction in Anaheim and found an EDOT among the
auction-fodder. Rob was selling off Pacs, Ms Pacs, and the
usual junk and the EDOT was about three rows down (on the
end). Nature called, so I had to excuse myself for a
moment. When I came back a few minutes later, I witnessed the
sale of the EDOT for $325! What the heck?! There were
still several whole rows of games which hadn't been auctioned off
yet! Anyhow, I've been somewhat irked about that ever
since. To date, I've never managed to get my hands on one of
these, but I'm still trying. If anything, I need one for the
reproduction project. And so the project BLOG begins. |

Ok,
so it's now 2007. It's been over 20 years since I saw my very
first Environmental Discs of Tron. I've seen these games on
and off over the last two decades, yet I've never managed to obtain
one for my own personal collection. At this point, I'm willing
to accept a gutted cabinet -- at least it's a start. Even
though I don't own one, this is one of my all time favorite
games. They really got it down when they made this
machine. It's all in the details, too. Not only is the
game fun to play, especially being immersed in the action by way of
the enclosed cabinet. But also the beautiful artwork and cool
lighting effects. This was a first class machine all the way! So
how rare is this machine? I'd say it's pretty rare these days
due to the same problems that gobbled up most of the Missile Command
cockpits, they're too fricken big for most ops to deal with.
However, I don't believe I've ever seen a conversion in one of these
cabinets, which is nice. |

Still
looking for an OEM cabinet or some cabinet parts to start
with. Anyone have a lead on one of these?
